Update on the free night

Well I met my husband for dinner at a pizza place.  Yes, I know it wasn't the best choice, but it wasn't so bad for me.  It was super thin crust and we had an Asian salad with it.  Then we came home and did a 20 min bike ride around the neighborhood.  I may be sick, but at least I got some form of exercise in tonight.  I feel a little better about eating the pizza knowing I as least got active afterward.  I would have liked to have done more exercise, but with this cold I don't have the energy and I don't want to push it and be sick longer because I didn't rest my body.  I need to go take some medicine and go to bed!

A free night

The cold is kicking my butt today.  My nose is stuffy, my eyes are watery, and I just can’t breathe right. UGHH colds stink!  My daycare person called me this morning and said she woke up with a fever and didn’t know what was going on with her and did I really want the kids to come over and be subjected to her germs.  Well if she was just sick I probably would have, but with the fever…no thanks.  Fevers mean there is more going on there.  So my mom came and picked up the kids to take to her house so they could spend the night and she can watch them tomorrow too.  My mom lives about 40 minutes from me so it’s no quick task to come and get the kids and then take them to her house.  She works, but can work from home plus my brother is there to help out.  Anyway, that means a free night with my husband which would be fantastic except I’m sick. Maybe we’ll make the best of it and go out to dinner tonight even with my sickness.  I’ll try not to breathe on the other patrons of the restaurant. haha  I'll do my best to make good food choices tonight.  Wish me luck!

Popchips giveaway at All the Weigh

So there is a cool giveaway for Popchips here.  Go check it out.

Well I didn’t get up and exercise this morning.  I have developed a cold.  I started to feel it coming yesterday, but I just kept hoping it was allergies, but it’s a cold.  I feel like I just want to go to sleep which I can’t do because I have to work.  I hate colds!  Why is it that they always happen when you decide to start up a new exercise and eating routine?  I refuse to let this derail me…it’s just going to delay me a little.  On a bright note, I ate pretty good yesterday, with the exception of dinner.  Here is what I ate:
B- cottage cheese with applesauce and a smoothie(yogurt, apple juice, flax oil, flax seeds, wheat germ,  chia seeds, protein powder, strawberries, water)
S – grapes
L – turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, and carrots
S – cheese and some walnuts
D – spaghetti (whole wheat pasta) with bruchetta bread

Making better choices

Yesterday morning I got up before work and did a 25 minute walk/run/, but my knee started hurting.  I guess all my excess weight pounding down on my poor legs is taking its toll.  So I guess that means that I need to cool it a bit and try some other form of exercise tomorrow morning.  I don’t want to just “rest” and not do anything because that only leads to not doing any exercise and then making poor food choices throughout the day.  You see today there were these yummy looking scones in the office break room and I really, really wanted one of them.  BUT, I resisted the urge.  I turned back around and went back to my desk and had some grapes instead.  This is small step in the right direction when it comes to eating.  I need to keep resisting the urge to eat those sugar, calorie laden foods that only make me feel bad after I eat them.  It may taste really good, but it’s just not worth it. The old “me” would have eaten it without hesitation, but the new “me” is taking a minute to think about how it will make me feel after I eat it.  As for exercise, maybe I’ll ride my bike tomorrow instead of my walk/run.

Taking up Running!

In January my mother told me about The Daniel Plan which was organized by Saddleback Church.  It was a year long program to get people eating better and overhaul their life so to speak.  My husband and I decided we would join in along with my mother.  There were small group meet ups once a week for 6 weeks and then the rest of the year there would be advice and so forth on the internet.  Well we started off really well and as time went by I stopped focusing on it.  My husband has lost about 30 pounds from the changes he has made in his diet, but I haven’t been so lucky.  I keep allowing myself to make poor food choices.  I have gotten a lot better than I was, but not fully committing myself to it.  About a month ago I got motivated and decided I was going to try running. My husband had taken it up and has a goal to run a 5k.  I would love to be able to share this with my husband, but I am extremely out of shape and running a 5k is a lofty goal at this point.  I was looking at apps for my IPOD and I came across the C25K app.  It is a running app that is supposed to get you from couch to doing a 5k in 12 weeks running 3 days per week.  Well I did the first week of the program for about 3 weeks.  The first week you have a 5 min. warm up and then alternate 1 minute jogs with 90 second walks for 20 minutes, then a 5 min cool down.  I have to say that I’m so out of shape that running for a full minute was hard.  Well today I decided that I would try to do the next week.  It is 5 min warm up and then alternating 90 second jogs with 2 min. walks then a 5 min. cool down.  I didn’t think I was going to make it the full 90 seconds, but you know what…I did!  It was hard, but I didn’t give up.  I must say that this circuit goes by much faster than the first.  Although you are running a longer amount of time, you have fewer intervals of each.  I will probably be on the second week for a couple weeks, but it’s okay. I’m not expecting myself to run a 5k in 12 weeks.  I have a long way to go, but at least I’m trying.  Now I really need to work on making better food choices.  Activity and food go hand in hand in the battle to lose weight.  Today is the day, not tomorrow or the next or on July 1st.  TODAY!

The Journey starts with the first step!

I've been spending a lot of time lately looking at other peoples blogs.  I am really looking for the blogs that showcase people who are on a journey to lose weight and become healthier.  I came across the blog called Ben Does Life and found inspiration!  Ben started on his weight loss journey as a promise to his grandmother to lose weight and become healthier.  He started working out and took up running. He has lost 120 pounds the hard way.  No surgery for him.  Just plain hard work and making better eating choices.  He has recently completed an Ironman.  I can't even imagine what that must feel like. Ben has even begun the Do Life campaign.  He is currently on tour doing 5k's.  31 of them in 40 days.  That is pure crazy is you ask me, but it is such a great concept.  He is getting people out there getting active.  It's not even about the running, it's about being together, walking, running, biking, rollerblading, etc. There is usually a healthy meal together afterward.  He will be in the Los Angeles area on July 23 and it is my goal to be there and experience it myself. I may walk most of the 5k but at least I'll be out there with other like minded people on a journey to be healthy!  If you want to check out the 5k cities the web address is

I was going to call my blog Denise's Journey, but that was already taken.  Since it was Ben's post that really got me motivated I decided to follow suite and name my own blog Denise Does Life.  It may not be original, but I like the idea behind the name.  I want to participate in life and not just watch it pass me by.
